So, I have a secret ... You don’t have to pick a singular design aesthetic and stick to the confines of its rules. No really, throw out all the conventional formulas “THEY” say you should stick to when designing your space. You may identify as a Modern Farmhouse devotee with its relaxed feel and smooth traditional lines. But what happens when along comes the most exquisite Italian Rococo mirror that you fall head over heels in love with? Not to worry, you can introduce said femme fatale into your design story. There really are no rules. Ultimately, if you select pieces that you love, you can weave them into your own personal narrative that reflects your design identity.
I believe that just like your fingerprint, your design identity is unique to you. This is where the “Bridging” comes into play. Your bridges may connect time periods, let’s say Neo-Classical (1760-1790) and Mid-Century Modern(1945-1969). One of my favorite designers, Tara Shaw https://www.tarashaw.com, is masterful in the execution of this concept.
You may also bridge Continents. Asia to North America, Africa to Europe. Further, bridging can occur between aesthetics, Coastal Décor and Primitive American. The bridging opportunities are truly endless. At the heart of it, all is YOU. Surround yourself with things that make you feel happy, inspired, grounded, and comforted. Select objects that as you’re rushing off for a busy day, catch your prereferral view and make you think, “Gosh I love that piece, see you when I get home!”
As you invite people into your home, let those lovely pieces be conversation starters. These décor expressions will give your guests a small glimpse into your personality and perhaps give them a better understanding of your passions and interests. It’s a nice way to connect with those you invite into your home and may help you discover a similar interest or even a new insight about each other. “Hey, gorgeous Murano bowl. Wow –you spent a year in Florence as an exchange student?I never knew that!”
Ultimately, it’s your home or space, so it’s your rules. Don’t be afraid to experiment with Décor Bridging. Create an interior that is distinctly YOU.
