19th Century Josiah Wedgwood Large Floral Edge Platter (color – Mulberry)
This is a nice and unusual example of Josiah Wedgwood Transferware. This large platter was made sometime between 1870 and 1880. The age is telling because the makers mark is impressed rather than stamped. This platter would make the loveliest centerpiece to your plate wall, or hutch.
The floral motif and scrollwork has a tropical aesthetic and is perhaps a nod to an Asian influence. The color is interesting in that is reads Mulberry with a brown undertone.
Overall this platter is in very good antique condition. There are no chips or cracks. There is a color anomaly directly above the center flower (pictured) It very likely occurred during fabrication. The back of the platter has many areas of discoloration and surface wear consistent with age and use.
